Roch
Carrier was born in Sainte-Justine, Quebec on May
13, 1937. As a child he could have possibly been one
of Maurice Richard’s biggest fans.
Unfortunately
when Roch was younger he was the worst hockey player
in his town and knew at a young age that he would
never accomplish goals in the hockey world like Maurice
Richard had. Little did he know, he would one day
grow up and write the most successful story about
the deep rooted rivalry between the Montreal Canadiens
and the Toronto Maple Leafs. And this story known
as The Hockey Sweater proved to be Roch’s
greatest achievement. Although he didn’t have the
same impact on the history of hockey as Maurice Richard,
he did however leave his own mark respectively. In
2001, The Hockey Sweater was made into a
movie Our Life with the Rocket.
Roch Carrier studied at the University of Saint-Louis
in Edmundston in 1957; this is where he received his
B.A. After this Roch continued his education at the
University of Montreal where he received a master’s
in 1964. To top all of this off Carrier attended the
University of Paris in 1970.
Roch’s first book was published in 1968, it was hugely
succes
sful
and was highly acclaimed, and the books title was
La Guerre, Yes Sir! Over the years Roch Carrier wrote
many books and screenplays, they all related to his
hometown in one way or another, despite traveling
the world his favorite place is his hometown, where
he grew up.
In 1964, Mr. Carrier took the job as a literature
teacher when he joined the French Department of the
Royal Military College of Saint-Jean, he taught here
until 1970 and returned in 1973 until 1990 climbing
the ranks until he became principal.
Between 1994 and 1997 Roch became the director of
the Canada Council of Arts. More success followed
in October of 1999, as he was appointed the national
librarian of Canada.
